Too cute!

Try bringing him out from the background some and you should be able to underexpose the black enough to remove it entirely. The nice thing about a solid color - so long as the subject is surrounded by it, you can extend it on the top/bottom/sides if it's not big enough on its own (ie you have some of your room showing in the shot). If that makes any sense :)

Going to setup the living room studio today for some costume shots myself (not of myself, lol)!
