DUDE.... I had the XT and a 70-200 2.8

The 30D is sooooo much better, and your lens is amazing. I love it. I wouldnt get the 70-200 IS because i hear the the IQ is better on the non IS.

You will love the 30D. It is outstanding!

Can you comment on your immediate first impressions of the 30D and how it compares to the XT?

I would keep the 350D and 2.8L and upgrade to the 30D...

Heheh... sure :D

Everything about this camera is amazing. It is like moving from a Mazda3 (which is great) to a BMW 545i (which is a slight upgrade)...

REad this entire thread... It is only two pages of short comments, but it is pretty much gone over well enough. Everything said has been my thoughts so far.

BTW, calzinger, what is the '1x Seiko watch' in your sig?

I have the Kinetic Seiko, its sweet. What is the 1x?

Chris,

Not much to add in terms of experience with either peice of gear, I have a 2.8 70-200 on the way now (Non-IS), after that I have my sights on the 30D. I'd say go for the body since you have an awesome telephoto and you're content with your other glass.

Dorman, how do you like your 17-40? I am thinking about replacing my 17-85 with that.
Do you ever wish you had the 40-70mm gap that would be between that and a 70-200?
Also about the sharpness, are you happy with it?

Thanks!:)

I actually took a look at that thread earlier today, but it's always better to hear from people who have actual experience with both cameras. Were the differences between the cameras, like the focusing speed, quite noticeable? How do the viewfinders compare? Do you think the larger LCD really will be beneficial? I'm sure the new controls took some getting used to, but after overcoming the learning curve, is the layout more efficient?

As for the "1x", it's just to note that I only have one Seiko watch. :D

Honestly, only having for a day, i cant say just yet. I think it may be faster, and willing to bet money on it being a lot more accurate.
How do the viewfinders compare?
I looked through them both at the same time, (it was goofy looking, believe me) and the 30D is a TAD bigger, but for some reason, just looking through the 30d alone, it makes a world of a difference. I felt like i was looking through a full frame. no, not really.
Do you think the larger LCD really will be beneficial?
Yes. I am a big chimper. (only to myself, im touchy about OTHERS looking at my unprecessed work :D) anyways, It was a lot easier cunducting my ISO and IQ 'tests' today on that half inch bigger screen. A swell upgrade.
I'm sure the new controls took some getting used to, but after overcoming the learning curve, is the layout more efficient? After almost 12 hours with the thing, I know it almost better than my XT. It is quicker and more room as well, since the body is larger. In the long run, i would say definately more efficient. I wish i couldhave started with a 30D. But then i wouldnt be able to appreciate i guess.

As for the "1x", it's just to note that I only have one Seiko watch. :D
I have a seiko (kinetic) and my dad has an old, big, serious seiko kinetic... does that make me "2x seiko watches"??:lol:

Sorry if i sound like a Canon salesman, but i just really love this new camera. If you have the money to get it, by al means, you will without a doubt enjoy it. I think my photography began to become limited as to what i can do, and the 30D may have just opened some new doors for me. :D
I took a look at your website, and you have some great potential, because i liked a lot of your shots. You will have fun with the 30D and the lenses you already have.

I sold my XT, but i wish i would have kept it. Try and keep yours, untill you can affor a second 30D. It will be a reliable backup, since you probably took care of it, and it will be great to have a 70-200 on it on your shoulder.

Thanks a bunch for the answers. The reason I'm planning to upgade the camera is actually because of the limitations that the XT has. I've been telling myself that I need "more camera", and I'm hoping the 30D can give me just that.

You said the viewfinder of the 30D is a TAD bigger. Is it noticeable? After using the 20D for a few minutes, I noticed it immediately.

The specs say that the shutter lag is well reduced with the 30D compared to the XT. After shooting a football game, I've become very annoyed with the longer shutter lag on the XT. I actually have to shoot earlier. Is the shorter lag and viewfinder blackout time noticeably improved on the 30D?

Perhaps I should let you have some more fun with your camera before I ask all of these questions. ;)
Nevertheless, thanks for the help.

I still remember when we chatted about upgrading and then you keep telling me that i shuould never upgrade till the time is needed to upgrade.
Anyway, i am so happy that i upgraded and i can use all of my cameras, even my 350d which you told me not to upgrade i will use it when i will travel few days, so you have to think of the present and the future, i can use old camera now and i can buy new and use it in addition, and i think i said i need another camera as i thought i can get better quality, but i can say that i need another camera not for better quality but for higher performances and as backups, i got plenty of lenses so it is a good idea to have some bodies to keep each with different focal length lenses.
Anyway, i am sorry for that chatting in the past and i hope you get what you "need"..... and....
GOOD LUCK.

I think we should start a poll and Calzinger should buy whichever wins. This will help him make up his mind :)

It still seems like you are unsure about the whole thing. People on this forum can give you all the advise they can but in the end it's you that has to live with the decision.

I've pretty much decided on the 30D over the 70-200IS. I'd just like to hear more about the 30D, possibly from users who have made the same upgrade that I plan to do.

I'll probably be buying the 30D within one or two months. I've just been so busy with school and want to wait until the holidays or until a shoot before I get the camera.

Believe it or not, I constantly hit the drive mode button with my nose since I shoot with my left eye. Countless times have I lost a shot op because the camera went into timer mode when I didn't even realize it. It's even more embarassing when you're shooting posed portraits, group or single.

I do this a lot too (and that's also why I'm fighting with the decision to upgrade to a 30D). Changing focus points is also a pain in the arse and often results in messing with the aperture or SS.

I think you benefit more by upgrading your body in this case (which is not always true, obviously).
