Aside from the wide angle I use just primes. I wouldn't hesitate to use only primes if I was carrying around two bodies.

I have two general zooms but use my primes most of the time, since I have two bodies of my own and one at work.

It is possible to live without a zoom - I did it with MF film equipment for over 30 years. You just have to get used to a lot of lens changes, and the possibility of missing a shot.

Now that I've converted to digital, I'm spoiled rotten with my 5D and 24 - 105L

in 1980 it was possible but largely because i had no choice .

today it's not possible; in fact i'd rather own just zooms :D .

I shoot all zooms for my work. I have 1 zoom for a beater body I keep at the restaurant.

Ok, so it's true ... I'm as old as dirt :)

I shoot with primes only. I do not own any zooms. I may break down someday, but for now, I'm satisfied.

I primarily use my primes (no pun intended). I don't think I've put my 16-35mm lens on my 5D yet...and I've had the camera for 5 months!

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I prefer zooms more than primes mainly for two reasons 1) I am not a good enough photographer to work with only primes. 2) I cant afford to have that many lens for such a wide area.

HAHA! You are as old as you think you are. My wife says I act like a 3 year old. So in a way I am staying young!! :):)

I need a poster with that motto on it, so I can post it in my classroom. :)

Of course there is also the saying my Judo sensei used years ago when I came back from a tournament a bit bruised up ...

"If you want to feel young, hang around young people. If you want to feel old, compete with them."

Then he'd walk away from me laughing feeling pretty proud of himself. Old age and treachery may have ensured that I won, but man o man did I used to pay for it.

The image quality of new zooms is great, but primes flare less and are faster.

24mm f1.4, 135mm f2.0 and a 1.4x extender.

That's all I take when travelling.

I use mostly primes as can be seen from my sig, but sometimes I'm lazy and use my 100-400;)

Primes are generally faster and I don't know of nything quicker than the Canon f1 50mm now almost a collectors item:cool:

I use both. I have wide-angle primes for work where I don't want curvilinear distortion. But zooms have a unique capability related to composition and perspective. When I am shooting landscapes I move back and forth until the foreground and background elements are in the proper composition and perspective relationship. Then I use the zoom lens to get the proper framing for my shooting position. With primes I would end up having to crop alot when I need, say, 68mm focal length and had to shoot with a 50mm prime.
