the feeling i get from this thread is some folks believe that if you buy the most expensive UV you'll get the best results.

i buy the hoys pros myself and i think a 77mm filter runs me about $35.

ed rader

I've had some CA and flare solely from cheaper UV filters, I've not had an issue with the B+H MRC's. Is $90 too much for a filter that fits a $1200 optic?

I have been doin' photography for almost 60 years.
I use B&W UV MRC F-PRO bezel filters on all of my lenses, mounted permanently. I have never observed any detrimental effect those filters might have exerted on IQ.

That's by far the most effective way to protect your lens front element from mechanical and chemical adversities . Also, the only way to complete environmental seal on a few Canon's WA lenses, as per Canon Corp. themselves.

I would get either the heliopan or B+W. I would avoid the Hoya. There is something strange about the coating they use. The Canon are definately the worse.

I thought maybe some of you would be interested in this site with lots of cheap filter prices. Here (external link) is an advertised B+W 77mm UV 010 Haze Filter Coated NEW F-PRO for $25.90 + 9.95 S&H. I personaly have never ordered from them but the only complaint that Ive read about was delivery time was close to 2 weeks, but at that price I can wait. Actually I will order the filter before my next lens arrives so its not really a factor for me anyway. They have no reviews at reseller ratings though. The MRC UV 77mm pro is listed at $54.95

Best Regards,
Logan

I used to never use a UV until I had a 300mm end up with a nice sized scratch right across the middle now nothing is shot without a UV.

I use Sigma DG multi on my 70-200mm and B+W on everything else. B+W or Heliopan, they both are fantastic and worth the money.

so what are you saying? that you've had CA and flare with hoya pro multi coated filters or are you making my point for me?

sure sounds like the latter if you've never tried the cheaper hoya pro filters.

I don't see where it specifies the coatings on those F-PRO filters, and on the ones that do specify the best "MRC" coatings go for $77 or so. Just be careful of what you buy.

Add me to the B+W MRC club....have one on each of my lenses, they stay there. Haven't noticed any problem with it affecting image quality at all.

I would get the MRC version of this filter. Definately worth the extra money.

I have ordered from Maxsaver before with no issues. It take about 10 days, but then they are coming from Hong Kong.

I use filters when shooting under adverse conditions. Also when I need a creative effect. The coatings on the Hoya hold dust and grease etc... and make it hard to clean.

Yes, I would never comment on something I have either not owned or not used. That would be the height of ridiculousness.

The ones in the link just say coated, which are the single coated. The multicoated are the ones to get. B+W does have a pdf filter book that explains all of there filters and the terminology associated with them.

That's what I thought.

Two comments, on of substance, the other purely editorial.
(1) All conditions outdoors( ), outside of our curio cabinets, tend to be "adverse" to a varying degree.
(2) ridiculousness (Iowan)=ridiculous(English)
