so what are you saying? that you've had CA and flare with hoya pro multi coated filters or are you making my point for me?

sure sounds like the latter if you've never tried the cheaper hoya pro filters.

ed rader

I honestly have not tried the Hoya filter, but having spent a great deal of money on lesser filters and finding them unsatifing I looked around for some better alternatives.

Seeing that many recommend the B+W filters and few if any ever had any complaints I switch exclusively to these. And I have found them exceptional. Seeing that I have a great deal of money in the lenses themselves the price of even the B+W filters was minimal. I have no complaints about buying 1 good $90 filter vs. trying 3 other $30 filters to find a good one.

I only use the the B+W 77mm filters on my 3 L lenses, so for me the price was reasonable. I haven't yet got around to purchasing UV filters for my 58mm but repair costs for these lenses are much lower in either case as well.

What size filter would anyone recommend for a 16-35? I know B+W, Heliopan, and Hoya all make good ones, but I would like to avoid vignetting on my 1DMKII(if it even occurs on there).

Heliopan SH-PMC UV filter, 77mm.

Vignetting not a problem.

I'm using a Hoya UV (N) filter... I'm wondering if I should sell that with my 17-85 or hold it to use for the 70-200 f/4 as a protection, rather than buying a super good B+W MRC one...

The latter version is pretty expensive (trying to save for more L glass) so I think I'm rather going to buy loads of L and then filters for it... What do ya think?

You might be able to stack filters on a 16-35mm and still never see vignette on a 30D APS-C sensor.

Any high quality filter should work, I'd avoid the wide angle type hower as they usually exclude front threads that are really nice for lens caps.

What version Hoya?....single coated; multicoated (HMC); super multicoated (SHMC); Pro Digital

If single coated or HMC, I would dump the filter with the lens...HMC only transmit 97% of the light (the rest reflects off the air-glass surface).

Hoya SHMC transmits 99.7% of the light, and the B+W is up in that range, too.

It's good. But not as good as the MRC. ;)

How would you rate it against the Hoya Pro1? Thanks

This is what's written:

HOYA HMC 67mm UV[N] JAPAN

So, it's the non-super multicoated. I used it with my 17-85 IS from beginning, but stopped to use it when I found out why my friend's 18-55 was always making sharper photos than my 17-85 IS. 18-55's still sharper, but not as much.

I hate filters (ex-including polarisers).

But still, would I be well set buying a filter to match my lenses, UV filter, protection, when needed; the best one, just plain best? Multicoated MRC B+W? In 'bad' conditions I don't trust the hood.

Gee, an 18-55 outperforming a 17-85, how horrible! I had a 17-85, and it stood up against side by side testing (at 70mm) to my Tamon 28-75 and Canon 70-200 f/4L and I always thought it too undeserved bashings. Others posted comparisons against the equally legendary 24-70 f/4L and it fared well in those comparisons, too! (But I digress...)

I think the Hoya SHMC can be equal to B+W. I would buy B+W especially for a polarizer, since the spinning portion makes polarizers harder to remove if they bind to the lens threads. B+W is superior in ease of removal!
