just got back from san jose camera and according to the salesman the new 70-200L f4 IS takes an AW2 tripod collar.

the price for the lens was $1199 or about $1300 out the door.

here's a sample at 200mm and f4 and a 100% untouched crop.

Wow ed, the tripod ring took that? Amazing!

Looks like a nice sharp lens.

you happy with it then? Looks nice and sharp in the full sized pic

Mind if I ask what camera it was taken on?
would appreciate seeing a sharpened 100% crop;)

simon -- it's really hard to tell from a few quick shots in a dark camera shop, but i can say that i haven't seen anything to dampen my enthusiasm. i'm going to have to see more before the wallet comes off the hip :D .

the camera was my 20d.

here's your sharpened crop.

Super sharp looking results ed.

B&H has both the non and IS version using the same exact tripod collar.

The IS looks whiter on the B&H page. Odd.

Hi Bluedog -- i wasn't sure about the collar but thought it was the same one. i'm leaning toward getting this lens but i want to see a few more tests.

btw, i like your katrina pictures and how you followed up as things sort of returned to normal.

i have a couple of questions for you:

1) if i were to own just one ND filter for my 70-200 for use at the beach which would you recommend. i want the "CP affect" but i don't want the hassle of a rotating filter and i want to use the full hood.

2) can you point me to a good place to research tripods and heads and maybe make some recomendations?

i want a lightweight tripod that will be used with my 17-40L and of course i want a good one cheap :D !

thanx,

ed rader

Ed, define "cheap" for a tripod. :) I've been immensely happy with my Manfrotto 190 w/ Joystick head. You can get much cheaper heads as it cost as much as the legs did. It's sturdy, rugged, and fairly lightweight. Give it a lookover.

Edited to add: If this is a joke from that other thread about tripods disregard my recommendation as I knew you were kidding around. ;)
