Ok, Ok...

I'm about a week or 2 away from buying some serious glass. I've been reading all the advice on this forum and on other review sites and have pretty much decided on the 24-70mm f/2.8L. (although I'm a little afraid of losing the wide end.)

I've noticed allot of talk about not being able to get a good copy of an "L" lens.

What's the scoop?
What percentage of them are bad?
How can I test one BEFORE I buy it?
Will it go bad over time?
Will canon replace it?

Please add anything else you can think of!

U got the wide end covered...........

24-70 is "nice"

My copy is pretty sharp........has a "slight"(very very slight) backfocus issue.

Will drive it down to canon one of these days, when I have time.

There was a learning curve for me............

U will love it...............just a little heavy.

You probably will miss the wide end with a 24-xx lens on a crop body, so make sure you keep your 17-50 until you buy a 10-22 :D I think very few L lenses are soft, but the only way to know is by testing your copy (preferably before you buy). Dont worry about degradation over time and yes Canon can correct any problems with the afterwards, most likely under warranty.

I did the same thing when I bought the 24-105 and didnt realize how much I shot below 24mm. Pick up an inexpensive kit lens and that will cover 18-24mm until you buy a wide angle lens. You will be very happy with the 24-70...its a great lens.

Yeah...the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens looks sweet but that costs about the same as the 24-70. I think I'll aim for a wide angle for my next lens for sure...then the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM.

It's only...what? $1300?

Anyone want to buy a kidney?

Wait till you lap that puppy on.

Make sure you post some images with the new lens.

If a shop I take a bunch of photos go home look at them if happy buy. Warrenty issues, as long as it falls in the warrenty no major issues so it need adjusting

You run the risk of getting something that defective anytime(with any electronic products). Its odds are very low though.

If it doesn't function correctly, it probably will stick out. And you will have a warranty that should cover it.

Anyone have any idea what the general problems with a bad "L" might be?

Would it just be soft?

Most times its user error. But if there's an error, its probably back or front focusing.

I think you need to not waste a lot of time worrying about getting a bad lens. If there is one down side to this forum it is the perception the new readers are left with about "bad" lenses. What you need to understand about what you read here, is this is where people that have a problem with a lens or camera come for help....you don't see the countless numbers of people that have no issues at all...because they don't need advice. I would think in the grand scheme of things that Canon QC is probably not all that bad.

I understand your reason for concern, after all the reviews I read where people wrote that they returned 3 copies until they got a good one!?! I'm buying a new "L" this week and will put it through it's paces extensively so I'll know in time to return it to the store as opposed to having to ship it out to Canon. I'd also like to know what percentage of lenses have problems, but we'll never know since Canon won't tell us and most of us that get good copies don't post just to say we got a good copy, where those who got bad copy are probably letting people know it.

Take lots of pics and analyze your focus point, zoom in for sharpness, etc. and I'll bet you'll be able to tell if it's a good or bad copy....
