Ordered it on Friday and should have it in a few days. Will I be able to shoot concerts wide open without a flash? I am interested in taking live concert photos in rooms that hold 3-5,000 people.

tough one, I dont think its possible with out cranking up the ISO. But maybe someone who owns this lens will chime in.

Hey col4bin, thats a hell of a purchase if you're not even sure whether it will do what you want it to do!!

I have the Tamron lens that is constant f/2.8, and I'm not sure I could hand hold at anything other than ISO 1600 in the low light of concert conditions.

And you've got one heavy lens to balance there!! Monopod at least I would say?

This not the reason I purcahased this lens but I was wondering if it would be good for that. It would just be an added bonus for me.

My primary use for this lens is going to be for sports.

Not knowing what type of concert you are referring to, rock, symphony, church, children's and etc. I'd guess from my experience with church concerts and animated singers and speakers, ISO 1600, f/2.8 and shutters speeds of 1/60 or less, IMHO, it will be hit and miss.

Unless I'm using flash, I prefer to shoot with a prime at f/2 or wider to stop subject movement. I try to anticipate when the subject will have eyes open and be momentarily still. When I do use my 70-200 L IS for low light witout flash, I've found that a monopod with IS yields more keepers than HH with IS.

Enjoy your new tool.

I was thinking about doing a rock concert and bringing my monopod. The band encourages photography and the lighting of the stage is usually pretty good as it is an important part of the show.

Congrats on the lens; you'll love it. It's the best till you go longer with a 2.8 prime.

Congrats on buying some wonderful glass. Enjoy. No idea about your question, I am so new to this that my camera has a disabled placard attached to it! :)
