I just got my first flash ever, and the 580ex is magic. I just flip into manual, set exposure, and BAM the flash did magic. I am amazed at how random snaps look soooo much better then without flash.

Here's a shot of my mom. She was using her laptop on the couch. I said her name and she looked up. You can see she is quite tired of seeing the flash fire. :)

I quite like this picture. I don't know why but it's quite cool. Looks almost staged rather than a candid but the effect is dramatic with the important bits in sharp focus.

I've just taken delivery of a 580ex too. Am well impressed although I've only used it in any seriousness as a wireless trigger to fire studio lights. The few test shots I've done though came out well.

It'll be interesting to follow your progress.

Light isn't bad at all. I don't like the blur either, too pronounced.

i think the point is to focus on the well lit subject of the picture and not the background. i think it dids its job well.

This image is a bit over-processed ... especially the eyes. And the background is too bright for her hair and outfit. I don't know if it was that bright or if you brightened it.

Next time, try an introspective expression, looking off somewhere. This one is a bit too staring at you.

To be quite honest, I kind of like it - just the way it is. Considering it was basically a goof shot it turned out kind of cool.

In my opinion the gaussian blur hurts the photo, especially around the head. Maybe try to get your background selected before blur instead of painting face back in. If the hair doesn't get into the selection it might not smudge the edges.

It seems many hate the blur ;)

I was just playing, I do like the lighting, however. Flash is very useful.
