If you stick with the 1.6 cropped cameras, the Sigma 30 1.4 is a good choice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have actually considered this lens as well, but due to the amount of quality control issues I have heard about Sigma, I'm a little afraid to buy one. If I have to go through the trouble of sending it back to sigma, I wouldn't be very happy. Do you know how the quality control is on this Sigma lens?

I've been told by a user who has the lens(and it defintely produces fine photos), that Sigma is very easy to deal with if that happens to be the case.

I will keep my eyes on this lens when I visit my local photo store next time. But if you had to choose between the non-L canon primes, which one would you choose? Should I take the extra step and just get the Canon 10-22 or Tokina 12-24, and use the 50mm as a walkaround lens? Thanks!

50 will be fairly tight. It depends how wide you like your "walk around lens"
I mean i've considered my 70-200 2.8 IS a walk around on a 1.6 crop, but that's me. It can change based off need. I've also used my 50.

Well, Tokina, i had. It was useable on my 1DMKII. It just vignettes till like 16mm. The 10-22 wouldn't even mount it without breaking the mirror.

But if you never upgrade past the 1.6 crop, the 10-22 will do fine. I do always have a bias towards constant apertures(Tokina is an f/4). Although the 10-22 is faster at the wide end. I do find EF-S limiting, having been a former 10D user(as it doesn't work on 10D, D30, D60, 1D, 1Ds, 5D, and film)

If you can with the Sigma, bring some batteries with you to the store and do a staggered line. Focus with center point and focus on the middle battery. You could see if it back focuses or front focuses. The lighting won't be ideal, but that seems to have been the biggest problem with the lens.

I just posted my observation about this lens, which I bought about three weeks ago - see this tread. If you like the angle of view - definitely get this lens, it's small, light and sharp wide-open. The AF is not that slow as it may seem from reading the internet forums. You really should try this lens at your local store, you really will be surprised how fast the lens focuses, despite not having USM.

Best wishes,
Oleg.
