However, the seller said something about needing to upgade the control chip for digi cams. Does anyone know anything about this? Would it be as simple as a firmware upgrade? Thanks, this whole not compatable with digital's thing has me confused on many fronts.

You would probably have to send it to Sigma for 're-chipping' which is, as you say, a firmware upgrade. Probably just as cheap to buy a new Sig 70-300 APO Macro lens which is very good for the money.
