EF-S Mount Lenses on an EF type Camera (30D)?

I've had someone give me an EF-S 18-55mm Kit Lens, but my camera is a 30D which uses the EF lenses. Can I use the EF-S lens on my Camera? If i mount it and try it, will it cause damage to the 30D? BillS

30D takes both EF and EF-S lenses. The 18-55 lens is actually the kit lens for 30D.

Ummmm, 30D is also a ef-s mount camera. Unless you have an old D30.

That is what I thought too, but got some info from the Web that made me ask the question. I was looking at the Canon Lens Description for the 18-55 EF-s at the Precision Camera website, and it said "EF-S Mount for Rebel and 20D" . I guess they just did not update their site info since the 30D came out.

It will work without a problem.

It is not that simple.

Canon has made many DSLR cameras that cannot take EF-S lenses (D30, D60, 10D, 1D, ID Mark II, and 1D Mark II N, IDS, IDS Mark II). Note that this list contains cameras that have 1.6 crop, 1.3 crop, and full frame sensors.

The only difinitive way to determine this is to just look at the cameras mount designation.

If the camera has an EF mount it will only accept EF lenses. If it has an EF-S mount it will accept both EF and EF-S mount lenses.

Making the determination based on the sensor size is a parcing method riddled with far too many exceptions to make it reliable.

There are a few important lessons in this post for you. First, read your manual, it would have told you that you could use the lens. Second, don't trust everything you read on the web. Find some good reputable websites, such as this one, and the official Canon sites when you are looking for information.

Also, I hope you are NOT planning on buying anything from this site, I did not look far into it, but it did not strike me as a good plce to buy from. I had a good laugh at the Rebel XT price on the homepage.

Moral of the story, always do your homework.

Also look on the lens mount on the camera there are two markings.
the Red circle is for EF lenses and the White square is EF-S both types of lenses line up differently.

Thanks all for the great information....

I would rather support a local business that employs people I know and work with in my community than buy from an internet site to save a few dollars (Their brick and Mortar store if about 4 miles from me). Luckily, I don't have to make that decision because Precision has price matched any online advertisements I have brought to them to date. It's also nice to talk to someone in person in the rare case you have to return something versus dealing with an unknown cusomer service rep on the phone. Kind of ironic coming from a guy who makes his living managing big projects for a company that sells eBusiness hardware and software. I buy plenty of stuff online, but not big ticket technical toys.
