I saw someone mention this lens in the forum the other day and have been looking into it as it has a good price tag! (cheap)

Ive searched the forum and seen quite a few people say the lens is good but I was about to buy one and saw it was a macro. I already have the Canon 100m Macro so am I wasting my time buying the Sigma?

As some of you prob already know I keep changing my mind with buying my new lens so bear with me! Im being a right pain in the behind but my budget went down a little and my needs! lol

Does anyone have any sample shots as well?

Thankyou Sarah :)

I've got this lens and I have to say I quite like it. 'Quite' means also 'hard to say' as I do not have any other standard Canon zoom lenses to compare. I bought it because of the limited resources and I think it delivers good value for money. Macro is an additional treat which means you can focus from as close as 20cm. Below is a wee flower for you to look at;). This has been shot with Sigma 17-70 in RAW and converted to jpg using Canon DPP software.

The lens is quite fast but I would not say as fast as USM.
Some people complain about Sigma’s quality control which means that you may need some luck to get a decent item;-)a
Look at this review as well:
SIGMA 17-70 Review (external link)
I found it quit informative and there are example full size images included.
The only issue I have so far is some problem with Speedlite 430EX. When I use it in auto ZOOM mode the flash zoom tends to hunt sometimes. I have asked about it on SIGMA user forum but do not have an answer yet. It may be a compatibility problem. I am not too bothered as I rarely use direct flash anyway.
Additionally the lens is brighter than more expensive Canon 17-85. I don’t think there is an alternative for cropped sensor EOS cameras in terms of standard zoom lenses.
Considering pros and cons personally I would recommend it.
Hope this is useful.

Here's a potrait taken with said lens. I'm really pleased with my copy.
BTW, I've not performed any PP sharpening on this so you can see straight out of lens IQ:

That lily pictures is gorgeous! Im thinking to maybe sell my 100mm canon if the sigma performs this well.

Thankyou :)

Yeah, whatever you do just don't get one from 47th St Photo. I just returned one to them. I had it over the weekend and it was horrible. When I asked them for a replacement, they told me that was the only one they had. So I had to return for refund and getting hitted 15% restocking fee and loose $20 in shipping + had to pay to ship this back to them.

I picked one up last w/e and so far am pretty impressed. I go tmine from Jessops and got them to price match it so I fot it for 225 GBP. The macro function is alot of fun - you can get so close the lens starts to shadow the subject!!

It will turn out to be a good purchase I have no doubt about that,,, I got mine off fleabay and in total came to £198 inc postage from dubai, it took 2 days to get to UK then normal delivery time on top so it should have took 3 days but I had a weekend in between so still got her within 5.

I only have the kit lens to compare against and it obviously is 100x better, I love using it and hope to learn alot in the coming months.
