Yeah, whatever you do just don't get one from 47th St Photo. I just returned one to them. I had it over the weekend and it was horrible. When I asked them for a replacement, they told me that was the only one they had. So I had to return for refund and getting hitted 15% restocking fee and loose $20 in shipping + had to pay to ship this back to them.

ouch.

Restocking fee? You pay it for them to put it back on a shelf!

It happened to me once. The company were going to charge me a restocking fee for a pair of shoes that were faulty - the fee was more than the cheapo shoes!

I still have the shoes. Never worn

Sarah, The 17-70 is not a true macro lens, unlike your Canon 100, I'd rather call it a closeup lens if needed. I think portrait photography is one of the strongest character of this lens, but I use it for landscapes, flowers, cityscape, buildings, cars, bugs, products and will use it for weddings next Summer. It's a workhorse and believe me it's got better IQ than some more expensive OEM glass.

Luckie; Sorry about your trouble, I wouldn't give up so easy! This can happen even with the most expensive L glass if you get it from the wrong place.

Oh thats good to hear. I was a bit worried I was overlapping with this lens and the 100mm im not sure anything could compare once youve had the 100mm though! lol

Very good lens. Does decent close up and also makes for a great walkaround. Hard to spend your money better at the price it goes for at the moment.

Sarah; Can you sell the 35-80 and keep the 100mm macro you have? The 17-70 will pretty much cover the range of your 35-80, plus it'll do closeups and it's real wiiiiiiide on your 300D! :D

Another happy owner of the 17-70 here. Absolutely great lense for the price. Constant f2.8 would have been icing on the cake, but hey we can't have it all =)

I'd keep the 100 Macro. Although the Sigma will give you nice closeups, it will never show so much detail and magnification as the 100.

Here is one taken with the 17-70:

Good thinking Sarah, I am planning my first model shoot after buying my first home, next year and I intend to use this lens, along with my Nifty-50, or for outdoor shoots use my Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-200 f/4. Jeesh now how much a home studio setup costs ???

Sometimes you don't want the sharpest lens to be your portrait lens, as it shows every little blemish on a person's face! :D
What I like about the portraits taken with the 17-70 is the tones. It has a warm tone to it and I love it. When it comes to sharpness, my EF 70-400 f/4L by far the sharpest zoom lens I ever owned.
Are you finished with the college now? maybe you'll get a job soon and you can get any lens you wish?!

Sarah, if you ever decide to sell your 100 Macro, let me know. I'll scoop that right off of you.
