Challenge #43 - Work

Work. Many of us are confronted with it daily. I'm looking for a photo that defines an aspect from one's job (or the whole job altogheter). The worker don't need to show up on the photo, and it doesn't have to be your job. A tool (i.e. a pen or a tractor) being used or not, a working space or a group of workers could be valid entries. As long as there's a remuneration/profit, it can be a job, even if it's a sideline/weekend job.

I'll try to judge by originality and overall technique. A short text explaining your subject or your shooting conditions is always cool.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me by PM!

Remember the rules... Name your artwork, and watch for picture sizes (800 pixels, 200kb)!!! All other rules below still apply too.

My Keyboard

I'm a loan processor for a local credit union. I thought this would be a fitting picture since I sit at my desk all day long. This picture is of my keyboard at home, we're not allowed to have cameras at work. :|

Hard Work

Title: Hard Work

Camera: Canon S2IS

Explanation: This is a school building project in Ghana, West Africa. A team from America joined with Ghanians in carrying 50 yo 60 pound solid concrete blocks about 300 yards from the block making site to the construction site. It is early afternoon and you can see the Americans in the foreground are wore out and resting in the shade while the Africans continue to carry the blocks in the background. The Africans worked all day in the blistering sun without complaint. Believe me - it was very hard work!

Missing Pad

This is part of my job, to take pictures of all the failing components and attach them to our online failure reporting tool. This provides photographic evidence for our vendors. In this shot, a component has been knocked off its solder pads and taking one of the pads with it. With the pad being gone, this board was returned to the vendor instead of being repaired in-house. The two solder pads that the arrow sticker is pointing to are about 2mm square in size.

I used my Canon S2IS on my mini tripod in Av mode at F/8.0 for 1/2.5 sec in supermacro mode and EV was set to -1/3. White balance is set to flourescent and I used the 2 sec timer.

It will sound very cliché, but I have to say it:
It's not easy to host a challenge and having to judge. I had favorite pictures from the start, but the hardest part was choosing three of them to be finalists (and eliminating the rest, even though they were good too!), rank them in order and explaining my choices. Whew.

1st place: chrysalis - How Many Guys Does It Take To Paint A Ship?
I really like this photo. It fits the theme very well and is nicely executed. I can really feel the size of the ship due to the angle and the comparison with the painters. Sure is an unusual job! The cropping is a little tight (missing an "S" from the ship name). ;)

2nd place: Edd S - Hard work
Right on the topic too. Good exposure and nice job in capturing the moment. The story helps to understand the photo more in depth. The hand holding a bottle on the left and the half-kid on the right are somewhat distracting though, but I know that in real life, we can't always rearrange composition to our likings. That's not a big deal (you didn't lose much points because of it) but it's the only negative thing that stood out to me.

3rd place: Shanen2179 - My keyboard
What struck me the most about your photo are the highlights on the keys. Very good idea, and a valid entry as well (keyboards can be used as a tool).

Runner ups, by chronological order:
Barbazan - Steam engine
Too bad it was overexposed. Good subject idea.

teekay - Work? The Young Chocolatier
You pinned the theme very well with this one. Background is a bit busy but otherwise the photo was well done.

Paul B - Steel drum practice
Very original! I knew my theme could be interpreted in many different ways, and you opted for a less conventional kind of work. In that way I consider it a legit entry, you scored some points for this. Picture quality is what penalized you the most, maybe your photo was compressed too much?

snowrdr - Missing Pad
Very good picture quality. It seemed a little bland to me (composition-wise). Of course, the topic was respected.

Jeff1 - no title
Too bad you didn't name your photo... You were really in the topic's bullseye, and the picture is awesome too. Technical downside: framing is a bit off.

Oh well, I did it. I spent the morning at work peeking at your photos in between jobs. It wasn't easy to choose the ones to keep and the one to eliminate.

The challenges seem less popular than before, at first I was let down because of the few number of entries, but it's just easier to judge. ;)

So chrysalis, I hope you have a good topic idea to set the challenge back on its rails! :D

Well done the winners ! The ship shot is great...
That A95 sure is a capable camera.

The truck in the wind shot should get the anticipation prize :)
