Have just bought a 400D and 17-40 lense and would like a zoom. I like street photography however am a bit shy and prefer not to be in peoples faces. What sort of zoom would be suitable for photographing say, people on the other side of the street, be lightweight and as small as possible? Would also like one with good bokeh.

Lightweight, good bokeh, and small? Dunno if one really exists. For good bokeh, you would need a fast lens (f\1.x - 2.x). There's the problem with light weight (how light, is light to you?). A zoom...

Let's say, and speaking from experience with only Canon lenses, 70-200 f/4 L as long as it is within budget.

Others might suggest otherwise, with valid reasons...but, I just like Canon lenses. What can I say? Habit, I guess.

70-200 f/4 L would be your best bet. Light & affordable L quality lens.

if you dont mind adjusting your shots by moving around, the 85/1.8 will give you a light lens that'll give you some range and great bokeh.

Currently:
Canon EOS 30D | 5D | EF 85mm f/1.8 USM | EF 24-105/4L IS USM | EF 70-200/2.8 IS USM | Speedlite 430EX

70-200 F/4 L gives you a very versatile zoom range and it's small enough to conveniently carry around.. also not too expensive (all things being relative).

I agree. The 70-200 has great IQ and is very light.

How about the Sigma 50-150 F2.8. Nice range, F2.8 for Bokeh, HSM focus motor, EX quality.

The 100 f/2 makes for a good sniping lens.OK so it's not a zoom but it is almost invisible, nice bokeh and sharp at f/2.

For street photography in that focal range my vote goes for the Canon 85 f1.8 if you will be using a 400D (about 135 mm focal lenght).

Again, not a zoom, but a great lens for your purpose, and a great combo together with your 17-40L.

Fast, light, small and black (will not atract attention, as big white zooms do), better DOF control than f4 zooms to isolate subjects from backgrounds, and relatively inexpensive btw.

I'd go with the 70-200 f/4L, but if you're very shy, give the Canon EF 70-300 iS USM a try. It's even smaller and it's black, so not as flashy and looks more like a consumer zoom.
