My personal review of the Canon EF 100mm macro...

Well, it's been a week, and weekend, and anothey day. All of a sudden, the lens arrives. Happy, but not so, with UPS. Long story, it's over now, I move on. Took some test shots late evening, no light outside so I find things indoors to test with before getting serious.

Lens is definately nice, build quality -- typical Canon, even for a non-L, it is solid! Focus is quiet, and you WILL need lots of light, for this lens' macro capabilities. Ring lite, would be the best...imo...as the 580 is good, but the rings will be better. The lens is very sharp, with a DOF at 2.8 for those that have used it, is a 'fine' line. For those that haven't, lemme tell ya, it's a 'fine' line.

No ducks, and worse yet, no days off left till Thanksgiving (work days, I meant), and I don't know where to find live turkeys...

Here's a test shot, at 2.8, with the 580 bounced, underexposed 1/3, iso 400, spot metered, tripod, shutter release, MLU, etc. It's not merit worthy, and as I mentioned, it's just a test shot...so just know that.

The 100mm f2.8 Macro is a fine lens, and I'm sure you'll enjoy using it. You're quite right, the ring flash helps a lot. I have the MR-14EX. It's great for the close up shots.

Thanks mark, I am sure to enjoy this, once winter is around. Even the 100mm focal length, on the 5D is admirable. I definately am loving the FF with these lenses.

One question...the manual mentions that the AF on the 5D will react better to 2.8 & faster lenses. Any experience that this is 'true?'

Oh, and by the way, the mask in the picture, it's about 2" x 2" in size...so it's fairly small.

One comment, unless you're only interested in stamps and the like, an off camera mounted flash is better than a ring light. Check out the macro rigs here from the macro section- very few ring-lites. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthre​ad.php?t=142566

Thanks Brian, I had seen that thread earlier...and was very interested in some peoples' setups. I am sure it will become more and more of an addiction...as the 50mm macro was pretty addictive too.

Here's another shot, that I posted in the Still Life forum, but doesn't seem to be the place where some of us frequent.

Hope you like it...to me, it's just proof that the lens is capable of so many things.
