yep and push and pull. I dont own one but have used. The advantage with the 100-400 is IS if hand holding in lowish light or slow shutter speeds

Im going to mostly use this lens for surfers and windsurfers, I might be handholding in braod daylight bbut will probably be on a tripod/monopod for the majority of the shots.

The wolf pics are mind blowing magnificent. The wolves may have to wait till I can travel to the other end of the world, but the 100-400 will not be waiting.

I'm a 300 f/4L owner, so it's "300 vs 100-400", but the solution appears to be "buy both be happy"

I have the 300 f/4 and the 100-400. Both are great. I am going to get the 400 f/5.6. Maybe next year.

Cool....I was initially worried about duplicating focal lengths, much as 400/5.6 owners would be, but it seems to work out for you. What/when do you use each specific lens? I'm concerned I'll use the zoom more because it'll be with me more often.

100-400 this Christmas, everything's good to go.. :D

My 100-400 is relatively new and I mainly bought it for my Namibia trip next year for the convenience. I had my doubts before buying it because I had borrowed one a couple years ago and didn't really like the push/pull zoom. But I think on a Safari it is important not to have to change lens too often so I bought the lens now so I can get used to the push/pull zoom before going. I am very happy with the quality.

Which lens I use is more or less up to my mood at the time of shooting. For example if I know that everything I am going to shoot is far away I might take the 300 F/4 and my 1,4x extender. If I know some is close and some is far away I would most likelt take the 100-400 and have my 1,4x in the pocket (have a 1d mk iin so won't loose autofocus).

what do you mean by "push, pull zoom?" Also can you achieve a 400mm look with a 70-200mm crop?

Whoa nice heron! No doubts about the performance of the lens there, although I think you sharpened it in PP (fair enough - we all do, even my gull shots with 300/4 and no TC) :D

Good point about the different lenses. If I knew what subject I was going to engage it would be easy to plan for it. Also, what is your strategy with dealing with a subject that gets too close and your prime can't zoom out? Just curious.. trying to learn from those who have been down the road before.

I have a 1D classic and a non-reporting Kenko 1.5X TC which delivers very surprising performance for a $80 piece of glass. Might use it with my 100-400 for 'emergency' 600 f/8 IS if I have to. Non-reporting will give even my 5D a fighting chance to obtain focus, at the worst it will try and miss. I have handled the 100-400 before and said "Some day I'll own it" - I never imagined that day would be so close. Push/pull is OK with me, better than my Sigma 70-200/2.8's very heavy zoom ring - luckily they made it big, I practically use my palm to zoom it rather than fingers.
