Push/pull means extending the lens rather than twisting it to zoom.

That would depend where I am shooting. In the zoo I would wait for the animal to move away again, especially if I am shooting through a fence. Or if it is possible to go around the enclosure then I could move to the other side.

IMHO if you have a very specific goal and want very sharp photos go for a prime. If you want a good all round multi use lens get a zoom.

Ive just sold 3 primes to get a canon 24-105 I found didnt use them much. However in the future I may need a prime for a very specifc need i.e low light bokeh or what ever.

The more you know what you will be shooting the better you will be able to make an informed choice.
