After reading incendy's thread about ST-E2 mixed with strobes, which shows the trick about taping the 4 contacts, that got me thinking and did an experiment with my 2 speedlites.

My 580 was set as master in M mode, 430 as slave in ETTL. I taped up the first 4 contacts on the off shoe cord, and did some test shots with my 20D. Sure enough, no more preflashes. Also I found out I still could control the flash outputs from the 580, and the opitical slaves were all synced up with the speedlites too. Test shots attached below.

I would like to use my 430 as hair light on a boom, controls its power from the 580, and try to loose the off shoe cord to go wireless. I will be metering each flash manually. My couple questions are:

1)Taping up the 4 contacts means the camera sends the sync signal to fire the flash only?

2) Will a Ebay wireless trigger do the same as I tape up the off shoe cord contacts?

Thanks.

1) Yes, that is correct, it sends it during the time when the shutter curtain is open. And there is a delay between the time the command is sent and the time the slave fires. So you will need to use a shutter speed of 1/125 or lower. If you use the max sync speed, you'll going to get a picture that looks almost like what a flash picture looks like when taken at faster than max sync speed.

2) Yes.
