My EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS lens is starting to do this more and more. I half press the shutter to focus and the IS system goes mental. It just buzzes and shakes like crazy in the view finder. If I let off the shutter, it stops and then everything works like it should again.
This happenened about 5 times during my wedding on Saturday, but still worked great for over 500 other shots.
It is my workhorse lens for sure, I love the sharpness I can get with it, especially for hand held portraits in lower light.

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this with this lens or any other IS lens.
I have 5 weeks off from weddings right now, and I am contemplating sending it in for repair, just not sure I could get it back in time.

I have three weddings in Dec-Jan, then about 5 months off right now, so perhaps I should wait until I am done those and then send it in. It still has warranty until June next year.

Hmmm... Canon CA(lifornia) was pretty good to me. I sent in all 3 of my lenses and got em back in a little more than a week - but I drove it down there and shipping back only took about a day.

Quitting photography for now, but thanks POTN we had a good run ;)

I have this great lens also and no I have never experienced the above . I'd definitely send it into Canon for a check up.

I've heard about the problem on this forum before. Have you tried searching for it?

I've heard of one other report of it happening, and I think it was one time here where it would shake quickly on the first press, but it wouldn't come back after that.

Mine doesn't have this problem and I've got a lot of use out of it.

/me knocks on wood

I've mentioned in another thread that this has just started happening to me. But like Toogy... it happens the odd time, but then the rest of the time it works flawlessly. It's not messing up any shots or anything... IS is no less effective on shots between these 'seizures'. I'm confused.
If you do send it in, let me know how it goes. I've never dealt with Canon Canada.

I'm probably going to wait until after my winter weddings. They will be dark!!! I need all the help I can get :)
I am also applying for CPS membership right now, so hopefully I'll be a member then and the repair process will be alot quicker.

nope. i haven't come across the problem. although i notice that when i am panning or move the camera suddenly, the IS will try to compensate and it shakes. but the shaking doesn't happen if i'm moving still. i do pan alot cuz i shoot automotive track stuff sometimes, so i just turn off the IS. it's in bright day light usually, so having it on wouldn't matter much anyways.

I thought you had to own a 1-series body and 3 L series lenses to join CPS. Maybe its just for the Australian CPS???

I got the application from Canon Canada and it doesn't mention anywhere on it about equipment qualifications. ???

My application was only two pages long, not six like the one you linked to.
