to work with your photos?

PP, resizing, etc?

I'm looking at a MacBook(not Pro), and looking at the Apeture software to go with it.

Also looking at a few Windows' based PC's(Dell, HP, Compaq), with Photoshop Elements, on them.

I can't really make up my mind on what PC to buy; I'm pretty set on my "stats", at 1GB of Ram, and at least a 60 or 80GB HD, with a 128MB Graphics card, other than that, I don't know what to chose...

Wow, killer setup!

What do you think of Elements? Is it worth the 100 bucks?

Photoshop cs2 is too much money and program for me. Elements 5 is just about right. Previously I used Elements 3.

My biggest, "baddest" PC is a Pentium 3.0GHz Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 1.6TB HD, X850SE HD 256MB Video Card, G15 keyboard, MX1000 laser mouse, and other assorted goodies. Wireless internet, of course.

Personally, after being a happy Mac user for many years,I switched to PC when I was based in Africa and generally pretty happy too, and then I was using an iMac a few weeks ago pretty much for the first time in 4 years well the choice for me is so clearly Mac ... way ahead of the PC IMO. Only problem will be screen size. A dual monitor set up os ideal, or one large one ... at least 19" if you can. You can use any old CRT monitor as your second one of you video card will support it.

Your PC spec will be fine, but I would ideally want an external backup drive too and maybe 2GB RAM is you can stretch to it. Not essential. I have an AMD dual core AM2 and in the UK they are much cheaper than Intel. You won't notice any difference in real world so why waste cash?

Dell XPS m1210 12" ultramobile notebook
2Ghz Core Duo
2GB 667mhz ram
8x dvd burner
Nvidia 7400 Go 256mb graphics
80gb 7200rpm hard drive
Dell 20.1" ultrasharp wideaspect external LCD
200gb Maxor external hard drive

Runs CS2 like a champ. I am currently in college so i needed a laptop to get around easily but didnt want to give up the features of a desktop. so i settles on this little powerhouse of an ulramobile and external montior/hard drive/keyboard/tablet. Really a great setup im finding.

for what you are looking to accomplish either setup would work fine. Really comes down to which OS you are more comfortable with. i will tell you though that trying to edit on a 12"-13" screen, especally the new clearview kinds everyone is using now, is a pain, quite a pain, especially if you want to print off of it. eventually you are going to need a external hard drive to store your photos on, probably sooner or later, so dont forget to budget that when you are making the order. and an external LCD for home would be a great move too, even the 20.1 ultrasharps like im using are down under $400 now, and a great piece of kit.

Thanks, thats kind of what i was looking for.

I've got a 20GB extra HD already, but I'm using an OLD P3 at 1.2GHz with 512MB of ram, and it BOGGGS on Photoshop CS, poor desktop! lol

Dell sells monitors cheap, really, really cheap(off-lease units). You can pick them up for about 130 bucks/each for a 17" flatpanel.

I use two. My everyday one, which I use for all my PPing is a self-built Athlon X2 4800+, 3GB RAM, 2x 250GB SATA RAID 0, 19" Sony LCD, Windows XP Pro SP2, Photoshop CS2, Paint Shop Pro 7, Fireworks 8.

I have network backup to a Dell XPS1000: PIII/1000, 512MB RAM, 2x 300GB PATA HD (software RAID 1) Ubuntu 6.06.1, Samba. Hopefully fairly soon I'll run some network cables or a wireless bridge to the garage, and put the Linux box in there.
