Still working on new sports to fill out my portfolio of sports. Earlier this year my trusty sigma and I took a direct hit during a football game on a tackle out of bounds which resulted in the mount on the sigma coming a little loose. I have been stalling sending the lens into the shop to be fixed but the issue is becoming very problematic as it shows up in these images. Anyway.... here is more in my photographic musing on the subject of field hockey.

Shot at noon using a 1D with 120-300 f2.8 Sigma plus 1.4 Sigma TC.

1) A little dueling for control of the ball

7) ruined image.... this is a really good example of how the decentered mount is impacting image quality... really a bummer

Hey Mark, those are fabulous. The color saturation is impressive, and you managed to expose the lit areas without the shadows being too dark -- did you do much post-processing?

I like the skinned knee on the girl on the right in the last photo.

If you're looking for a new sport, come round the sportsplex with me sometime & we'll do ice hockey together.

Mark - Dealing with harsh, brilliant, high-in-the-sky sunlight is a real challenge and what looks like artificial turf must have made it even more difficult. But with the game being played under those conditions you had little choice but to deal with them. These are very good; however, I honestly don't think that any are up to the portfolio standards that we normally see from you with the possible exception of #s 2 and 6. Don't get me wrong, most folks would be very happy with these images and I bet the players would be thrilled and buy them, but I know you can do better. It might be time to send the glass in for maintenance and chalk the shoot up to a learning experience ;) .

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Nice shots Mark. My 300 almost got drilled by a pass at a football game last Saturday, luckily the guy next to me reached over and pulled me out of the way.

fslshooter - thanks for the comments. Yes, agreed.. none of these are "portfolio" quality to me either. I rather referring to being comfortable with being able to shoot the sport as part of my list of sports I feel comfortable shooting. You know, that basics like how does the action develop, where to sit to get the best sight lines, etc. So yes - agreed - no portfolio shots here... I don't even have a real portfolio yet. But many thanks for taking the time to comment, always appreciate the feedback.
