I just got this lens and love it so far. BUT, I went outside with it this weekend and took some shots, but I could only get about 1 or 2 dozen shots before I ran out of batteries. AND I am using the grip with TWO batteries. At first I thought my batteries were not good or were already run down, but when I went back inside to shoot the basketball games they charged up no problem and lasted just like normal. I recharged and went outside between later games and the same thing happened. The weather was about 40-45 F and sunny. The sun made it feel warmer then it was.

Do you think the cold zaped the batteries that fast or was I just shaking so much the IS was going crazy and eating up the batteries, or is this normal for IS systems? Or any other ideas? Or was I holding down the shutter half way so long it over used the IS?

you should be able to shoot all day with a grip with two batteries. i had a similar problem but it was the grip, which canon fixed.

try using the lens and camera without the grip and see what happens.

try switching the positions of the two batteries. i remember that happened to me once and i did the switch and it worked fine. usually i can fill up two 1GB cards before i'm even low battery. i have a 17-55 IS too...

Definitely not a normal situation. I usually get 200-300 shots from a battery even when doing frequent chimping.

I shot over 2000 pics with the 24-105, grip and 2 batteries. They're still half full. I think it's a problem in your grip or batteries, IS will only take away 10-20% power.

I got mine about 6 months ago and have not really noticed any difference in battery usage. I very rarely run out, and if I do it's usually because I forgot to charge up before going out, or it was bl**dy cold outside!

I do not think the IS would drain batteries that fast

It's hard not too because everytime I pause to do so, my rotten "I'm going to post a shot of you chimping for POTN" husband takes a photo! Thus far I've been able to delete them....
