I am looking into spending more time at the beach so I was what lens will be good for some good surf action?
I was told that the 70-200mm will be good, since I have a 10mp I could crop to bring it closer. I don’t want to deal with primes because I will use this lens for more that just surf action. Have anyone every shoot surfing action with the 100-400mm? I when to the lens thread and saw lots of birds and animals that looked amazing but how would this lens be for fast surf action? Do yall have any other recommendation?

Canon 1D Mark II N/5D Mark III/ 6D/ 7D /85mm f1.2L Mk1/ 24-70 f2.8L/ 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM/ 100mm Macro f/2.8

I've used the 70-200 L IS with 1.4 Tcon, and the 100-400L for surf action. Between the 2, there is no camparison, the 100-400 L is much better because of the reach. It's definitely fast enough for surf action as long as you use good panning technique.

I picked up the 500 f/4 L this past summer and this is in a league of its own, but at a steep price.

Based on my limited experience, I know the 70-200 with a 2x extender is barely there (and I have 16.7MP to work with). Without the extender you need a shore break or a jetty going out near the surfers.

I lean towards the 100-400 w/a 1.4 or 2x extender
or better yet a 600mm lens should be about right.

My experience is two different days while visiting Hawaii on business about a month ago.

Just my opinion,

Seriously, will depend on how far out they are, the 70-200 would be good, fast and sharpe.

If I had 7k to spend on a lens, I would not have the Xti :) I figure that with te crop factor its going o give me 640mm on the long end, so it should be enough.

Why not just RENT a 600mm lens for a day. Make sure you have a good monopod ready to go, though.

an XTi would produce images just as well as another camera with that lens on.
