Congrats! My 50 f/1.4 misses the 85 f/1.8. They used to be a pair all the time.

The hood seems like pretty cheap plastic. I'm going to be very careful packing it in the camera case. I don't use UV filters so it's my only line of defense against lens damage.

The 85 seems good out of the box! Here's a very unscientific focus test. 100% crop (center of image), wide open, .jpg mode, black levels adjusted in PS, save for web: high quality.

That does look good. I have not done any "test" on mine. I just did a real world stuff. I am pleased!

Shooting a newspaper (tripod mounted camera) seems to be a quick and easy test to see how your copy of the lens does wide open. My 85mm at 1.8 performs better than my 50mm at 1.4.

Here's a quick grab of a tree stump with my new lens wide open. Curves, saturation, and USM in post. :)
