My dad just got a Digital SLR. He got a Nikon D80 though.

Heh, actually I'm the traiter in the family, he's been a Nikor/Nikon user since the 60's. I got him on to Canon briefly when I let him have my EOS 3000 when I moved to a digital SLR. He also had a Canon P&S camera that drove him nuts (actually me too, they should call them POS's). Looks like he's returned to his roots. I actually can't wait to see what this D80 is like. Now to get a 30D for myself so we can have a fair fight. I don't think my Digital Rebelwill stand up against the D80.

Tell him congratulations. As long as it takes great photos and he has fun doing it, that is what it is all about.:D

Well guys, I headed over to my parents place to check this new camera out. I have to admit it's pretty sweet. Got it with an 18-135mm zoom with it. Lots of range. The part that I didn't realize is that the Nikon camera hasn't changed their mount, so my dad's Nikor lenses from 1967 still work on the new digital camera (the aperature control is still mechanical). I thought that was pretty cool. Overall I'm very impressed. I will however be sticking with Canon still, too much investment to switch up now. Looks like I'll have to start saving for that 30D. The functionality of the D80 blows the Digital Rebel out of the water. But I expected that.

My dad is really really happy with the purchase, and looks like he'll be getting back into photography in a big way. I'm glad, he's the one that got me into photography when I was a kid. For some reason he stopped being interested in fully manual photography when I got my first Canon SLR. He was finding focusing to be a challenge, and really liked autofocus. Somethings annoyed him about the newer cameras though. Hopefully he'll be shooting a lot more with the new Nikon. Nice to see him enjoying a hobby that he stopped doing out of frustration. I can tell already he is really satisfied with the D80.

Uh oh, the Nikon is going back already! Bad pixel on the screen display. Went bad this morning apparently cause neither my dad nor I noticed it last night. Not a big deal, but might as well get it replaced while you can.

That's one thing i like about Noinks, the ability to use some of the older (cheaper!) glass on the newer cameras.
You have to check for compatability with metering etc. on some models but It opens up a great source of cheap fast glass.

I still use an MF lens on my old F100 and it's a lovely lens and cost me about £45 :-)

It's just nice to know that we can slap on some of the older lenses if the need is there. I think my dad has 6 or 7 Nikor lenses around. That's quite a lot of investment to replace. I know they're not all necessary because he does have an 18-135 with the camera. But the Vivitar telephoto and the 55mm Micro (Nikon's Macro that was supposed to go past 1:1 but didn't :P) come to mind as potentially useful lenses. Plus I guess the 50mm prime he has as well. I think it's f/2 but it's reasonably fast.
