I took these with my 100-300 usm and can't figure out what I did or is my lens off, one or two came out ok but not great

These were taken the same time

Any help or suggestions are appreciated
all were handheld, can it be camera shake at that speed?

If you open the images up in the Canon software, then you can see which focus points were used for the image. That might answer your question.

I suppose it's possible I just thought there were no particular spot on the original image that was very sharp it seemed like it would beep but it was not come into focus

In the first 2 pics it looks like focus was beyond the bird.
Really looks like you can see the limits of the DOF on the water - more obvious in the second shot.

It happens a lot when shooting birds on the water, I find. I have a ton of problems focusing my bigma on birds in the water. Geese and other long-necked birds just make the problem worse. Egrets are the absolute worst.

I just shoot twice as many pictures and try to focus the best I can. You can always delete the OOF ones afterwards :)

1. Occasional bad focus in auto mode happens. Even with my 1DsMkII (although less often)

2. You need to apply some sharpening to the images (in camera or post processing)

3. Your lens is contributing to the softness (try the lens at 100mm and 200mm (I don't know where the good spot on the 100-300 is). Based on the MTF charts that lens has very poor sharpness at 300mm (even at f8 ), much better (as in decent to good) at 100mm (although it deteriorates quickly at wide open aperture).

4. Some of the blur in the 4th picture is bird movement.

So the solution is bring the lens down off 300mm, keep it at f8, apply some sharpening and accept that some of the images will miss-focus.

A final note the actual focus point is larger then the square that shows in the lens and in some rare cases can be offset slightly making the problem worse in one direction. I would play with the camera to see just where the actual focus points are. As example on my old D60 I found the actual focus point was almost twice the size of the square shown and would always go for the most contrasty object in its field of view, which meant I got a lot of backgrounds in focus and fuzzied out the models. At least until I figured it out.
