Magnificent shot Romy, the Glareola maldivarum (Oriental Pratincole)
is a superb beautiful bird and captured here in-flight is excellent. Lovely colours even on the underside. Great catch-light on the eye too.
Nice one, well done.

What a wonderful image, colours and sharpness are fabulous.

A1 servo worked a treat for this shot :)

Eric, comments well taken, the direction of the sun was not working for me.....:)

Here's the same bird 2 frames earlier.... amazing AI servo performance of the 20D at f/8 considering that I've pushed it beyond its AF specs, ain't it?

The wonderful orange color under the wing is missing in the second image but i still prefer the second as it clarifies for me excatly how the bird's head looks. Wonderful captures. I take it the tamron allows you to autofocus...how much does it slow the AF on the 400? I am asking because the Canon 1.4 with the pins taped just doesn't work for me and I have to keep manually focussing so I am considering the Tamron.

Thanks, Gary.... the bare 400 is of course faster, but with the standard Tamron 1.4x, it's still fast enough. The bird posted is a very fast flier and it was coming just at a slight angle to my position.

Just from field feel, I'd say the AI servo speed of the 20D + 400 5.6L + Tamron 1.4x with the focus limiter set at the farther setting is about the same as the 20D + 100-400 IS at 400 mm, with the focus limiter set to 1.8m-infinity on the latter.
