It all really makes you realize how precious life is and how fragile out time on earth can be. God Bless Calico!!

This is an improvement, you should have seen the before pics

Happy "anniversary" of sorts. It's a blessing that you're still around to remind us all of the fragility of life. I've come to understand that all too well this past year with the passing of my long term companion last January and with my mother's very recent diagnosis of ductal carcinoma. I've learned to embrace life as a result of experiences such as these and live each day to its fullest.

Glad you're still around and hope you celebrate many more of these anniversaries.

Thank you, sorry to hear of your loss, life can be hard at times, but we keep moving forward

Maybe some day I'll be able to tell my story too.. :)

But you are so right.... live while you can - oh, and you might like to know - 100-400 in the pipeline. Not immediately, but Real Soon Now.

Nothing like a lens as an antidote eh? ;) soon soon..

BTW, I am keeping the 300 as well. I also figured out why the 400/5.6 is perfect without IS when I went to play with the gulls. Naturally you need a fast shutter speed to freeze the birds for flight shots, and since I was swinging my 300/4 all over the sky in three dimensions, I was fighting the IS system more than it could help me, and I turned it off. You can pan in mode 2 (stabilizer disabled in ONE axis) but the dang gulls were all over the shop so it was better to go with the flow. You really only need IS when you are going after things like ground based wildlife which stand still long enough for you.

I have similar experiences with my 400, I normally shoot at 1/1000th minimum, so IS would not help much there. The IS on the 100-400L is awesome for all kinds of still objects, plants, flowers, people, landscapes, sunsets

Nice story to share.... Thanks for doing just that.. Sometimes it just takes something eye opening to see that life is not the same for everyone!

Jim, just came across this thread, sorry I missed it. Happy 10th "anniversary". I had one of those too many years ago...

It didn't happen after the experience, but probably more so after I got a bit older - I love life and I love everything about life. There are downer days, there are days when you just want to turn into a serial murderer at work, occasional arguements with our sweethearts, but in the end - we got our beautiful lives and enjoying every moment is a great feeling. One of my mottos: try to live every day like it's your last. I honestly don't know when I'm gonna check-out: tonight or 50 years from now, but my goal is when it happens and I'm chatting with St. Peter and Satan (both argueing that I deserve the other most :D), I want to have minimal regrets (i.e. should've done that, could've had that, etc.).

Sorry about turning Your thread into a narcissistic stream of consienceness. Let's have a drink, buy an L, love our loved ones and enjoy it! God Bless!

Glad to see it all worked out.
I see one big "bright side" to this story that has not been mentioned - you are not living with the guilt of having killed another road user.
Maybe more than one lucky person in this story?

That is a good point, thank goodness there was no passenger either
