Well, whats your next L going to be ;)

The 50...I'm pretty much decided...it was either going to be the 85 1.2 or the 50 1.2 (the 300 2.8 is way out of our budget) and since I want one I can walk around for hours with, I think the 85 is out too....so now, (though don't mention it) I'm campaigning for it for Christmas ;)....I'll let you know on the 26th how successful I am

The 50 huh. I am not hearing great things about its focusing speed, I will wait for your review before buying one

Thank you for the comment and inspiration, buy an L :)

I just did! :D

B&H is still "processing" the order. I think it takes a little while to pick the couple of other small items I got at the same time (saves shipping). Needed a new insert for the Domke to carry the 100-400, and I am so happy to get a little $13 flash/umbrella holder too.

I was driving long distance and thinking of your story yesterday too.. quite sobering when you really feel tired and decide to pull over before you become a casualty.

WHOA....going for broke I see! You've been drooling over the 85/1.2 forever, now that there is a new 50 out, tough call...

Get him something nice too :D

Thanks to you it has definitely been a walk on the wild side... 300/4 IS, 1D, and now 100-400.. as we always say when you can't make up your mind, BUY BOTH!! You and Snir showing me all those fantastic 100-400 pics.... oh BTW, a new friend of mine gave me a good tip as to where I can find semi-tame birds of prey, one of the zoos does a show with the birds daily. (I don't care if I shoot in captivity, I doubt there are any wild ones here anyway)

*hints to PG* both 50/1.2 and 85/1.2 mmmmmk?

Uh oh, better run. puddlepirate will be after me for daring to suggest that :p

OK OK... PG - get him to get you the 50/1.2 and then you get him the 85/1.2 so you can uhh, borrow it, once in a while :p

The 85L is so very sharp and the bokeh at 1.2 is out of this world. The 50L is going to be a smaller 85 I belive. I am not hearing good things about its focusing speed. Won't make a good walk around lens with slow focusing, unless everything you shoot is staying still.

On another note, I got a chance to test out the new 70-200 F/4L IS. i was taking shots at 1/8th wide open at 200mm on a 1DMII. Sharp and clear were the results. I do not need one but I give it two big thumbs up. Its exactly the same size and weight of the original

Personally, I dig zooms, so no 85/50L for me. In fact, I may be disposing of my 50/1.8 because it is so rarely used. Once every six months!

Nice to hear the 70-200/4 IS delivers. I don't use the 70-200 zoom range so much, so the 100-400 will have to do it for me. I have a Sigma 70-200/2.8 for that range. Still can't decide if it should be a f/4 or f/2.8. Currently happy with 2.8 but it is big and heavy as we already know.

One advantage of Canon lenses over Sigma's version is that they have a focus limiter to reduce AF hunting. Yesterday I was being thrown around on a boat with a 300/4 and I used the focus limiter because my subjects were way more than 3 meters away from me.

Just found this. I've had some life altering experiences, but nothing like that. I think I appreciate life so much more and my relationships are sweeter and deeper now. And I think I enjoy my time to play more.

You are blessed that you recovered fully. And 50 is young. People live til they are in their 90's now. The best is yet to come!

You have got to try the 85L, it will change your mind about primes. It has a learning curve, getting things focused properly at F/1.2 can be tricky

Thank you for the comments, if 50 is young, I am doing really good at 30

I thought you said you were 50. Oh, was that someone else? I'm losing my mind. Just ignore me. :)

I would say you are going to be the end of me and my wallet, but I don't take portraits (given general dislike of people), so... I can't even find a plausible excuse to shoot this one :D

Have handled the 85Mk1 at my dealer's place though and what an absolutely MAGNIFICENT piece of glass it is. You look through the front bore and almost expect to be able to see eternity in it.

And then some. :)

My life altering experiences are still continuing as I have to make some tough decisions in the next few days. Sometimes, things don't just happen. We have to go with them. Our choices are clear, other times, they are not.

He did say today that he didn't care if I got the 50...I did want the 85 but I truly want a walk around lens and I think the 85 is supposed to be heavier than the 24-70, which I hated hauling around...and MDJAK's photos w/the 50, plus the fact that he said it focused faster than the 85 are making me lean really hard towards this lens. I'm going to search out every report on it btw. now and Christmas :)
