He'll probably be posting wildly (something quite different for him) after the 100-400L arrives :)

Ahahhaa.. you ain't seen nothin' yet :p

I even have an idea of where I am going to bless the 100-400, and it may not be with a duck, but rather large bird of prey... may the 100-400 be as sharp as the eye of the eagle and as fast as its swoop

He did say today that he didn't care if I got the 50...I did want the 85 but I truly want a walk around lens and I think the 85 is supposed to be heavier than the 24-70, which I hated hauling around...and MDJAK's photos w/the 50, plus the fact that he said it focused faster than the 85 are making me lean really hard towards this lens. I'm going to search out every report on it btw. now and Christmas :)

Come clean; "didn't care" because you told him "I want a 50/1.8" right

Or you could do what some of us technologists do. If we 'feel' it is the right one, and there aren't enough reviews, well SOMEONE has to buy it and find out, and yes, I have sometimes been the one to step up to the plate..

70-300 was like that all the way. "Not enough reviews" "Not enough evidence" and my answer was "I'll take it" and look what awesome duck shots it gets :p

Have you considered the 35L as a walk around. Its 56mm on the 30D, and it is light(well lighter than the 50, 85 and 24-70) and focuses very fast. I use mine on the 1DMIIN all the time as a walk around. Its 45mm on the 1D.

Actually, no I've never considered the 35mm...I don't know why. Probably because I rarely use that focal length...but maybe I should look into it. The B&H catalogue came today and it said that the 50 only weighs 19.2 ounces...that's not bad. Unfortunately I cannot find one camera store w/in 3 hrs of where I live, that actually carries any of the lenses I want to buy...they all say they cost too much to stock and won't order them (go figure) unless I actually commit to the purchase....

and no, Lightstream, I showed him the lens in the catalogue...not only does he know which version but he's very "aware" of the staggering (it does seem like quite a lot of $) price....that's what's making me wait and be sure I want it...

I am convinced you should get the 35L. Its lighter, faster focusing, much cheaper $1100.00, and its a perfect focal length on your 30D. The 50 is too slow with the focus, its more of a portrait/wedding lens it seems

The 50...I'm pretty much decided...it was either going to be the 85 1.2 or the 50 1.2 (the 300 2.8 is way out of our budget) and since I want one I can walk around for hours with, I think the 85 is out too....so now, (though don't mention it) I'm campaigning for it for Christmas ;)....I'll let you know on the 26th how successful I am

gotcha. ;)

It was somewhereinbetween and it is not too bad....

My wallet was quietly weeping, so I had to research to find out why.

Calico... Thank you for sharing your story. It's nice to have some of the backstory of these people on this forum. It's a blessing to have you around.

Try the 35L out before making a decision. You'll be glad you did, even at 35mm, its a great overall lens.
