Superb shots Rafael. I envy that you spent 40 days on travel in Europe. I bet that was a memorable trip.

Thanks @johngpt and @digita_AM.

Yes, it was the greatest trip I have ever made, without a doubt. Every day was a whole new world to discover (even if it sounds like an Aladdin song :) ).

Great shot yourself with that fantastic lake! I love how the sun is past behind you and only lits directly the background mountains. Really nice.

Rafa.

Friends,

I recently went to Europe for a 40 day trip and took all my equipment with me. I brought with me a new 10-22mm which I used often (trying the lens and also having fun with the UWA) but the 17-55 was still my primary 'weapon'. It also was my carry-on lens in places where the bag was not allowed but the camera was, like inside some museums.

I brought back around 6500 (I deleted many of them during the trip) and I am still going through them, but I wanted to share some of them here, as this truly is a spectacular lens!!! I love how it is a most useful focal range but it also allows for heavy cropping if the situation calls for it. I must say though, that, for the first time, I had some issues with flare on the lens and kept changing to the 10-22 on certain conditions. It can be interesting, but if you want contrasty back-lit images, this lens can really post a problem!

That said, it is so fantastic I feel bad saying anything negative about it, so here are the pictures, hope they speak for themselves!

Hope you guys enjoy them,

Best regards,
Rafa.

Great job with a very minimalistic setup (550D!).... just tells you that one can take excellent photos with this camera that can be had used for under $400 these days...

Thanks @absolutic! You are very kind.

Well, its a fact that the 7D, 60D, T3i, and T2i have essentially the same final image quality (albeit focusing speed can be different, FPS, etc.). But yes, I am a firm believer of glass over body and have aimed at that with my setup from the start and I believe it was the correct approach, but its hard to resist temptations to always go with a better body and then get stranded with lesser lenses :) .

Thanks again! Hopefully I'll be sharing a few more by next week. Best regards,
Rafa.

@GrendelZ, while this is very 'traditional' (in the sense its a textbook image) I really think you nailed the timing, composition, exposure, setting and location. Great shot!

Rafa,
Your lens choice shows in your pictures, wonderful.
I especially like what you did in Venice and the museums.

Not an award winning shot, but a interesting sample of this lens' capabilities.

Really debating hard whether I should pick this lens up or not. Has anyone shot any live shows with it? Crammed up into the stage, right infront of the artist kinda gigs? How did the AF fair? 17mm wide enough?

I can't specifically speak to shooting shows, but I've shot plenty of action shots and it never failed me. The 17-55 might be the fastest focusing lens I've ever shot actually...

17mm is fairly wide, but you might want an ultrwide if you're really close. Why not try your 18-55 since it is a similar width?

I'm very much contemplating picking up a Sigma 10mm as well, but if I decide on getting the Canon 17-55, my budget gets stretched quite a bit! I'll have to do some experimenting in my room with my Kit eh! Why does this cursed hobby cost so much?!

I'm very much leaning toward the Canon offering instead of the Sigma since everyone seems to agree that the Canon tracks and focuses a lot better. Decisions decisions
