Would you say the 17-55 is accurate in low light / "not as contrasty as you would like" situations? ISO 3200, f2.8, 1/160 kind of situations with light behind the subject? I was shooting a show with my Sigma 30 and the hunting and little variances in accuracy were a little frustrating. Thinking about picking this lens up today... hopefully I can atleast throw it on my camera and see how I like it. A lot of the shots in this thread are wonderful!

It'll be real nice to finally pick up a decent event lens!

Sorry for slow reply, had a few days away. I've never used the 17-55 in low light, unless its been on a tripod, doing a landscape with MF, so can't comment..........

Sure, no problem.

thanks a lot!
I thought u had used increase or decrease the exposure using lightroom for the sky, or used it on the building.

looks like i am wrong.

will try it soon.

Just a real world sharpness test. I don't do test charts and the like, because that isn't what I take photographs of. This is a portrait of a couple of good friends here, the owners of Max's Conch Bar in Deadman's Cay.

Image taken with 60D and 17-55 at 55mm -

1/100 sec
f5.0
ISO 400.

Minimal processing in LR4, just a slight exposure and clarity bump. First is the full image, second is a 100% crop (and it even looks good at 200%).

I have both this and the 15-85. I sing praises for the sharpness of this lens-I don't know if I ever heard of an unsharp one!
Like someone said, if u zoom to 200% I usually see some pixeling before I see any softness.

The USM is great in low light- especially considering the age of the lens. I use it in AI servo mode on my 7d and hardly miss a beat with my niece and nephew- however the IS is always an issue huh? I haven't had it fail on me yet as some have but I keep mine off until I need it- but for video-IS is ALMOST a must, but unusable if your recording sound.

That said- anyone considering buying this lens-trust the thousands who advocatte this lens and get it-chimp and be impressed like the rest of us!
