Usually I shoot them with a little bit longer lens, but I wanted to show more context this time. All the times I have photographed rattlesnakes I have never been struck at and I make sure to stay outside of striking distance. I also use a spotter with a snake stick to tell me to get out of there if it starts moving towards me. I guess I probably take some indue risk, but I have never really felt threatened around them, they usually calm down pretty quick.
