A better effect to get rid of the emptiness and draw attention to the subject would to simply do a 1:1 or 4:5 crop, and then tighten up the cropping to your liking.

Leicester Square is similar to Times Square, a place always full of people.
The emptiness makes the picture unique, it tells a story, maybe I'll just remove the vignette.
