I'm heading out west to visit a bunch of national parks and there aren't many 17-55 landscape shots out there. I've been toying with the idea of renting a 16-35 or 17-40 to use for the trip. well, you may want to get the 17-55 for the trip, works nice as a "single" lens for me so far; if you'll shoot landscapes, every once a while you'll want the extra zoom capability that the lens offers over those 2 focal lengths you mentioned, plus the IS feature allows you to shoot handheld at smaller apertures/slow speeds (for some DOF) so you don't necessarily need to haul the tripod all the time. I don't care much about f/2.8 (because shooting landscapes) however this fairly fast aperture helps to achieve more accurate and faster AF performance (on 40D at least it does, or is supposed to), plus the benefit of brighter viewfinder. I used to have 17-85 and switched to 17-55 for wide angle performance - 17-85 was disappointing at wide end while 17-55 works well accross the whole focal lenght range; hardly any chromatic aberrations (in-camera jpegs are definitely possible) and frames are sharp all the way to the corners... 5DMk2+EF 24-105mm F4 L, 40D+EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, Alien Bees, more stuff...
