I love the lens so far. Great and sharp picture. I like the sound of the focus too. LOL Anyways. I was taking a picture point upwards fully zoom and it started to unzoom itself. The lens can hold itself when its fully zoom in a horizontal stance, but when its in a vertical stance the lens will zoom but inverts itself. It cant hold itself at full zoom in the vertical position. Is this normal?

Current: Canon 40D w/BG-E2N, Canon 30D, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS w/EW-83J, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS, Canon 580EX II, Crumpler 6 Million Bag, and B+W MRC on all my glass.

Yeppers, that's why it has a zoom lock switch. After time the friction will go away and the zoom will be a bit more smooth, the down side to that is that you focal lengths will slip when shooting at an upward or downward angle.

I finally got this baby some two weeks back so my zoom ring is still tight. I usually hold my lenses by the zoom ring for stability, so If it does start getting a little loose, it shouldn't be too much of a problem... Regardless i LOVE this lens :)

Congrats to the new toy! Now it's time to save up for an expensive telephoto, zoom! :D
Btw; The zoom lock on this lens will only work at 17-mm. I never used it since I had it.

a.k.a zoom creep. No probs on mine so far though, lets hope it stays that way.

As mentioned just keep your left hand on the zoom ring.

Here are some of mine. The photos in this link are mostly close-ups taken to test the ability of the lens.

All photos in this link were taken with the Sigma 17-70.

I really have enjoyed this lens.
