Fast primes and extension tubes apparently work well anyway. I must say, this lens is perfect for this sort of application (well, I was not in the bleachers or anything, I was standing right outside the ice behind the glass). It's very quick, the focusing is great, I just held down my * button for continous focus, and it's pretty damn sharp at around f2.0 or f2.2, but even wide open it's good. To purchase all of them would be redundant. You need a long zoom such as the Sigma 70-200 for field sports, also.

Last weekend I rented the 70-200 f/2.8L for my son's night football. It really helped me to understand what I read on here about different lens when I try a different one. The $63 was well worth it and I got some good shots also.

In a nutshell they make it so that lenses can focus closer to subjects, increasing the magnification and therefore they are uesd on lenses to improve macro capabilities. You can add it to any lens. Not sure where you get the "it will increase it's macro", that makes no sense, it will increase its "macro capabilities". All they do is increase the closest focusing distance (so you can put your camera and shoot closer to the subject) and they increase the magnification.
