To start it off, keep it around $500-600. That basically limits it to a 70-200mm f/4L or a 70-300mm IS.
The 70-200 is an L which makes it appealing, but I heard that the 70-300 IS is considered a hidden L lens. The longer reach makes it appealing.

So which would you recommend, and don't let it down to the L.
Some comparison shots would RULE from someone who has both.

Thanks a lot!

IS is pretty useless for moving subjects. So you have to discount that unless you plan to use the lens for other photography.

I'm sure the 70-300 is a stellar lens but it's slower than the f4L and you may need fast shutter speeds to get the shots you are looking for. Fort that reason 'd choose the faste r of the two lenses. The constant f4 of the L makes it the winner in my book.

You could also save for something like the 300f4 IS or the slower but excellent 100-400 but they are serious money.

Hi

Depends on how close you can get.

If a 200mm lense is sufficient then consider the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lense.

All the best

for motorsports i would try to aim for the 70-200 2.8 sigma, or save up some more for the 100-300 F4 sigma.

The 70-300IS lens is f4 at 200mm. Although IS will not help you with the race cars it will definitely help you steady the camera/lens when using the longer focal lengths so that the only thing you are compensating for is subject movement and not camera lens/ subject movement. I own both the 70-200 f4 and the 70-300IS lenses and I think the 70-300IS would be far more versitile for your use even though the 70-200 is a very good lens.

well for motorsport you usually use 1/125 or 1/250 shutter to get some motion blur (who wants to see frozen cars!?) so f4 will be enough.
