Honestly, I don't know, Jim. That's why I asked you to explain. I know the mirror being down, the sensor sees nothing. Just that for some reason, when I was taking pictures of a watch, in a really low light, even at f/2.8 @ 100 -- the lens was hunting. I turned up the ISO, and something changed...a new variable, and the lens focused. Could be subject distance, or some other factor, but that's just what I noticed. I will have to try this again, to see if it's really the case.

Hey, no offence was intended btw - not trying to be unfriendly here, may have come across stronger than I intended accidentally as I'm pretty tired atm :)

I just received my 70-200 2.8 IS from B&H. I always like to check the manufacture code and mine in UT1114....That's Nov 2005. Something does not seem right that B&H had this lens sitting around for over a year.

I have not had a chance to test it out yet but I am concerned I got someone's return.

I got mine from B&H 2 weeks ago, it's a UU07. Hard to say though, doesn't necessarily mean yours is a return. Just get out and use it, make sure it works right and takes nice pictures. All I know is I love mine :)

None taken. I am always up for a mental challenge... :)

As for the OP, I hope his lens works out for him.

In my own experience, as my 24-70 is on the camera most of the time, I forget that when I put hte 70-200 on that the minimum focus is much further than I'm used to...esp when I'm playing with it in my room.
