I have had my G3 since June 03, and now financially am able to consider a few extras. I thought the purchase of a UV filter should be first - and this will need a conversion lens adaptor. I can still buy this in New Zealand. What sort of UV filter (does is it matter?) should I get? And when I search New Zealand sites for a 58mm close-up lens, I can't find one. Any suggestions? I am going to the UK via Singapore in August. :)

Yo,
I just got the Hoya 58mm UV filter and a Canon one for back-up. Any 58mm will do, but I personally like Canon and Hoya.
Also, I don't know . . . I've seen that several G camera owners don't like the Canon lens adapter ( http://www.canoncompanystore.com …160A001AA&CategoryNo=1734 (external link) ) because it is quite overpriced for a piece of plastic, and bulky (obstructs the viewfinder and flash). However, I read that since it is to be affixed onto plastic, it is better that it is a like material instead of a metal that would degrade the mounting area. I don't know how much of that is acutally true.
I am a snob (a.k.a. lame) when it comes to my camera, so I would only use Canon and other reputable brands on it. :)
Well if you want to shill out a pretty penny there is always: http://www.canoncompanystore.com …820A002AA&CategoryNo=1734 (external link)
But I'm sure someone else could more aptly answer you latter question!
Take care. Bi bis.
Me, the FLea

Hi, I am also from NZ, I purchased the lenslmate adapter from the US, shipped to me in about 5 days, I got the 52mm tube so it would block less of the flash, plus filters and other lenses are cheaper for 52mm.

Are you in Auckland?

I got a Marumi +10 closeup filter from Camera and Camera for about $65.00.

I have purchased a Hoya UV and Circ Poloriser from Trademe totalling $20.00 including shipping.

Thanks for that info Submannz. Where did you go to get the info from the US - in other words, where did you buy it from? I presume you mean $USA65, not $NZ65 :( .

No, I am not in Auckland - Invercargill, other end of the country!

Take a look at the Canon 250D closeup lens. Expensive because it is top glass, but oh is it nice!

Many people prefer to take the 52mm Lensmate route, but sooner or later you will come to situations where 52mm will cause you problems, or you want something that is 58mm. Step up/step down rings aren't the answer.

I have four Canon LA-DC58B adapters. One for filters and closeup, one for reverse lens macro, one for teleconverter and one for wide angle converter. Makes changing lenses, etc. easy and saves on wear and tear. The Canon plastic is just as strong, if not stronger than alternative adapters.

WHat is the power of the Canon 250D Closeup filter? I have a set of there Maurumi's +1, +2 and +4.

As for ease of getting your hands on a Lens Adaptor, I am also in NZ, and had mine on order for two and a half months, just got it on Friday! I looked into the lensmate, but it was going to cost too much to land. I also wan't too fussed about blocking the flash as I have a 420EX, and can always take the adaptor off if I am using the flash (usually the case).

I also agree with Submannz on keeping an eye out on trade me for filters and stuff, there are some good deals to be had there!

The lensmate adapter cost me about $70 NZ dollars to land, all I can say it was well worth the money.

As for the +10 closeup filter that price was NZ dollars, little bit cheaper than the +1,+2,+4 sets.

Yes I am in Auckland, but hopefully for not much longer, am looking at moving to Christchurch
