I know, I know, the moon's been "shot to death" on the forum but I just had to post this one. It's my best result yet and it's handheld! I probably cropped it a bit too far, but I wanted to see how large I could make it and still have it look half-way presentable.

Shot with my XTi, EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6L at 400mm, handheld. Manual settings, ISO 200, 1/160, F11.

Great stuff.

I am curious as to why you used F11 aperture though?

Thank you all very much for your kind comments. Someday I hope to use this fine lens in daylight too! I've always wanted to photograph the moon, and thanks to the forum I finally know how to do it, now it's just a matter of improving on the pictures.

Regarding question about the F16 aperature setting; for moon shots I usually use anywhere from F11 to F16 and try different ISO's and shutter speeds to get different results to choose from. F16 seems to get the sharpest results so far with the least washout in the brightest areas. Still a work in progress, so if anyone else knows a way to better the results, I'll be glad to hear it. I usually use a tripod and remote switch but didn't have them with me last night.

I too would love a long lens like that. I would be there having a crack at the moon too :)

So you are stopping down to reduce the brightness?

I would say you will lose quality and detail due to refraction at those high apertures.

Try F8 and up the shutter speed to get the right metering or ND filters?

You are prolly at the sweet spot of the lens at F8 and it's worth changing everything else to cater for it. You certainly don't need a great depth of field so you may as well go for the sharpest aperture.

Use a tripod and ISO 100 as well to get best quality

I would love to see what you produce at F8/ISO100/tripod and you can more or less guarantee another clear sky in the UK tonight ;)

Thank you for the advice, I'll give it a go next time. I usually do use a tripod and remote switch, but the night I took the posted picture, (due to a prior commitment) I had literally only about 3 minutes to grab the camera, attach the lens, get outside and fire off a couple shots. It was very impromptu, which is probably why I was happy enough with the results to post.

Unfortunately in Wisconsin, it's been extremely cold, extremely windy, and cloudy/rainy/snowy most days lately, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to try again. So far clear today, but who knows what it'll be by tonight.

Very impressive shot, and all the more so for being handheld.

Doh didn't notice your location sorry :o

It is very impressive for a handheld shot :)

Thank you all for your kind comments and advice. I'm going to be getting the Canon 1.4X II extender in a couple weeks, so I'll try again then without cropping so much. In the mean time, here's one from tonight same lens, same cropped too much, etc, this time with tripod, remote switch and an ISO 100, F8, 1/160.
