Well as I have mention in my last thread the 70-300 IS goes and the 80-400 stays (70-300 at 200 with 1.4 TC beats 80-400 at 400 on sharpness and contrast. At 400 the Toki has similar resolution to that I saw on the Canon 90-300 USM (sort of painterly)). So I lose a stop, but gain 3 stops IS, better IQ and weight and USM!

What do you mean fully stowed? Is the focusing on the 300 NOT internal? I thought both lenses were like 8-10 inches in length (I guess that is not zoomed out and focused though or something?)

When I extend the hood it gains a few inches.. that's what I mean by racked all the way out.

I believe! I believe!!

Neil.... good call on that. If apertures are equal, IS wins hands down. In my personal opinion, it takes at least 1.5 stops of aperture to beat a 3 stops of IS. But if it's equal....there's no contest. And comparing the Toki to a 90-300.. ouch.... I can never live with that kind of IQ again.

Heh, even with the hood fully extended I would think it's about a foot, right?

9.5" without hood with caps on. Hood adds two inches (11.5").

100-400 add 4 inches (15.5" total). Now that is the Beast indeed.

out of your top three picks, my personal pick is hte 100-400 and the main reason is because of IS.

Is the 15.5 inches fully zoomed out?

Anyway I think it's obvious the 300mm F/4 is my lens for its size :D.

Yes, correct. Wanna buy a 300/4 IS? Mint condition, two owners, first one was a hobbyist who knows how to take care of good glass ("Cuz I'm replacing this one with a 500/4 IS"), second one just upgraded to 100-400 and never took the glass into difficult situations. :)

Ok, after following this thread for a few days, I have been convinced to trade in my 200-500 for the 100-400L. It's only money . . . ;)

Thanks, Lightstream. I had been following that one, too.

That thread helped me make up my mind as well, but as this one specificly delt with the 100-400L and 200-500 lenses, so I decided to post here.

No worries..glad we could be of help :)

I made the journey myself and I am glad to have arrived.... I shot the Tamron, never liked the plastic or the DC focus drive. Bought the Bigma, too heavy. Bought the 300/4 IS - very nice but not a zoom. Geez....what a long journey it has been ;)

Yep. IS, full time manual focus and construction are the difference makers for me. I'm willing to pay for them.

Focal length was the other deciding factor for me. I was not willing to trade focal length for IS because I try to use a tripod for telephoto shots. I think construction is about dead even because I do not like the push pull action of the 100-400 compared to the zoom ring of the 50-500.

Could you provide more info on the Tokina 200-500? I'm not familiar with it.

Canon 5D, Digital Rebel XT, BG-E4, BG-E3,
EF 17-40 4.0L, EF 50 1.8, EF 100 2.8 Macro, EF 135 2.0L,
EF 70-200 2.8L IS, Sigma 17-70 2.8/4.5
Trading Tokina 200-500 5.6-6.3 for EF 100-400 4.5-5.6L
