I think you need to be assertive ... and that doesn't mean getting mad. You sound resentful. He needs to stop competing and get his own interests.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Do not let him bring the children to this event. Both he and the kids will be a distraction to you, and you don't need that when shooting for pay.

If you are there to work...and being paid to do a job....the last thing you need are your children running around. Once a year many businesses have a bring your son/daughter to work day....that might work out for some folks that have desk jobs....but you don't have time to be playing mommy while you are an event photographer. Have a talk with your husband and explain the facts of life to him....namely that the children would be too big of a distraction.

I took my husband along to a shoot once as an assistant. Never again. He kept saying things like "That's a good shot, do it this way, ect". I did some of what he wanted, He was wrong!
I would get him his own dslr. However be prepared that eventually these shoots he is setting up for you, he may be setting up for himself.

As for your upcoming event I would approach him this way... Honey I am really worried that I will have trouble concentrating on the job at hand with you and the kids there. Lets get a sitter for the kids. You can go but you have to not do anything to distract me.
