Is it too dark..? Would it have been better if I took it on a smoother bit of sand..? Or is it alright..?

Personally, I think you've got this just right!
Sand gives good texture, light & shade is well balanced, and overall the image is well balanced.
I like it. Good work...

The exposure is perfect as far as I'm concerned. Great detail in the lightest and darkest areas. Nice composition: intersting sky; angry sea; and the person in the distance adds an interesting element. Nicely done!

Very nice. And I agree that the person walking along the beach adds a "story" to the pic.

Nothing wrong with the exposure. The end product is a moody picture.
