Just wondering if any members have sold there 1 series camera to get the 5D and happy with the switch. What concerns me is the 3FPS and the build compared to the 1 series. I have heard that the results right out of the camera are much better. I am not doing much birding but still will be doing sport shooting of my kids.

Dan

I didn't quite do it in that order, rather I got the 5D then the 1D classic. I imagine the 1DM2 is a beefed up 1D that still retains much of the basic operational characteristics.

The way I feel about the whole thing is that the 5D is very much more "me". The camera suits me, down to the ground. In-camera results are much better than the 1D classic which had horrible JPEG processing. Considering that my primary applications are landscapes, cityscapes, followed by events coverage, product photography and general use, which do not require exceptional speed, the 5D is more than enough and the image quality is awesome. The 1D is my backup camera that is dedicated to action work. For all around shooting I still prefer the 5D. It is a wonderful blend of everything.

AF and AI Servo is good, very close to the 1D, but the 1D still has a noticeable edge. 45-point AF is far and away unbelievable.

Build is somewhere between the 20D and the 1D and to be honest closer to the 1D minus the weather sealing. Quality is very good. Don't understand the comments about plasticky.

I feel they both have their place. Wouldn't sell one for the other.

Personally, I don't think I could ever give up the 1Dxx series body for a prosumer model. But that's just me. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having FF. Certainly not enough to give up the 1D2N.

I had both for about a month, during which I tested them together as much as I could. The result for me was that I kept the 5D and sold the 1D II. If I were a fast-sports shooter, or if I had to frequent situations that might be rough on the camera, I'd have kept the 1D II, but I am not.

In the long run, full frame, better noise characteristics, low-light focusing, and camera size/weight beat out frames per second and the expanded feature set of the 1-series for me.

As for results out-of-the-camera, yes, the 5D does produce a useable product more often. But that's probably a result of the picture styles more than anything. Many don't like them, but the capabilities of the picture styles seems to allow me to mimic types of film that I've used in the past (even though Canon doesn't name them after film types or brands). On the 5D, Canon seems to have honed the in-camera sharpening to a point where the results are crisp without appearing as over-sharpened.

Thanks Tom, sometimes I just think about switching to the 5D, selling the 17-40L, buy an 85L and keep the 24-105L, 135L and 300L. This would give me a nice lineup for landscape and portrait but not sure how it would work out for my daughters soccer games.

As I was just saying on another thread, when you can't make up your mind, BUY BOTH!! :D

Soccer would be a little bit more challenging but it can be done. If she's not playing at that high a level, it might be easier.

LOL....You have the best of both worlds, the "N" and the 5D.
Are you enjoying both and what do you like about each?

I also switched selling my 1dmk2 for the 5D and like the 5d image quality much much better. As a result I switched to prime lenses. I love the IQ, full-frame and am shooting more JPG than ever before with PP only for cropping. I don't miss the 1dmk2 although I never used the fps for my type of photography. There is a big difference in build quality but I got used to the 5d very quickly. The quality of the images outweighs the build quality for me and the lightweight compensates for the build quality as well. I'm taking the camera everywhere with me.

Well....

5D- Full Frame, ISO low noise, Big viewfinder, large image files.
1Dmk2N- FPS, build, interface, 45 AF points, AI Servo, Raw/Jpeg capture on different cards, built in eye cup extender.

I really do miss my 1Dsmk2 as the interface is not that of a 1 Series. I am really considering selling/trading my 5D to get another 1Dsmk2 as I have heard that canon will not be replacing the 1dsmk2 for some time to come. Dont misunderstand the IQ and benefits of the 5D, but it is not a 1 series and I am spoiled.

It seems most on this board think the 5D is better than the 1DsMII  The 5D has higher IQ, is sharper, better ISO. The list goes on, what was Canon thinking about releasing a better model than their top of the line model in a prosumer body
