Not so much the composition, more technical aspect. I have a Canon 30D with 550Ex speedlite, probably be using the 50mm most of the time as I am shooting for a friend (there will be a pro there for the group shots), I am only there for the wedding/candids.

The question is, using the flash, I have a diffuser, now what settings should I use ? Lets assume it's indoors with light bulbs.

Do I?

1) Av mode with flash sync at 1/250 ? Is that with 550ex pointing at the subject with diffuser?

2) P with the same flash set up?

3) P, bounce everything off the ceiling

4) point the flash up with the little reflector thing sticking out 90 degrees.

Thanks. :)

Hello,

Most of the times this is how I do it:

Manual mode, set time for 90, aperture 1.8 (is that your lens?) flash e-ttl will take care of the rest.

You didn't mention what light diffuser will be used(based on description I'm assuming lumiquest or strobo), in my case is GF PJ pointed up if low celing is available.

I never like ceiling bounce as it just doesn't work well for me. A diffuser over a flash mounted high has always worked best.

The lens is the f/1.8 MKII, as for the diffuser, there is no marking on it. So I'll have to show you a pic.

I think its a strobo

I'm a fan of the 60 degree bounce with a catchlight card out. Seems to do the trick. Lights the background well, as well as the subjects. manual, at ISO 400/800 (normal light/dim light), f/5.6, 1/250. Give that a shot.

There is no single angle of flash head that works best. It depends how far you are from the subject. The closer you are to the subject, the more the head has to be pointed up at the ceiling. Otherwise the flash just goes past them or you blast them out.

I don't want to sound like a commercial but...
GF PJ I would not go to a wedding without it.

great thread. I'll be doing some candids at a wedding in March and need all the advice I can get. I have a 30D and am yet to buy my flash. I'll be getting a 50 1.8 very soon :)

In the world of photography $50.00 is not really a lot of money for what it can do.

You'd be better off just playing around with different bouncing techniques for now. Practice with those around the house, etc before purchasing all kinds of add-ons that simply create more variables to overcome.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I gotta agree. The Lightsphere II diffusers do a great job.

20D, "P" mode, 420EX bounced with Lightsphere II

I agree..
But on the flip side of the coin, for the peace of plastic that makes you look like Rambo in the world of photography, even $1 is too much.

Rebel XT, M mode, 580EX, bounced, with nothing on it other than built in catchlight panel.
