Curtis, if I got a three-day suspension from here, I'd really be testing the water resistance of my equipment, as I'd be crying copious tears.

I'll delete that shot and post a link to it which is what I meant to do.

the real, GEN U WINE DOLT.

Right, some others have a problem reasoning.
His sentence you quote means nothing, NOTHING.
Faster than 85 L....what kinda qualification is that ? All lenses are faster than 85L. Even macro lenses.

Oh, Petie, if only I were half the writer some others here are.

Well, in a nutshell, it feels like a baby 85L. I'm not a fan of the 50mm focal length, but this made me one.

It focused as fast as any other lens I own. I immediately used the 400 DO for the first time, and the 50 seemed to focus faster than that.

I then tried the 300 f2.8 (for only the second time; first at B&H months ago). Did it lock on as quickly at the vaunted 300? I would say yes. I noticed no difference.

As to its sharpness wide open, that might leave a bit to be desired; though that's probably the case with the majority of lenses.

Is it worth the huge premium over the 50 f1.4? Only your pocketbook can answer that question.

Mark,
Did they say when it would be released?

I asked that question and the rep thought before the end of the year.

I said to him: What's taking so long?

He said: Come on, we just introduced it.

I said: It seems like a long time already.

I can see nice bokeh and color as well, oh and fast, but is that all?

OK, at least those are some answers.
If the lens turns out to be of lackluster sharpness wide open, back she goes for el refundo, or I just might take a 300 f/2.8L out again although it is of a limited practical value to me. However, the lens does make a highly productive POTN conversation piece.

Nice enough shot, but as much for the guy and MD Dolts ability to relax him than the lens. Nothing to get me a lather over when I already own one of the best 50mm lenses ever made and I paid £60 for it  Good bokeh? Eh? You'd get that with a 1.8. For 'certain members' only I suspect!

Funny you should say that. When I approached him, he recognized me from the seminar the night before. I told him I was trying out Canon's new 50 (he's a Canon shooter too) and I wanted to take his picture. He said to me, okay, how do you want me? I said to him the same thing he was saying to the models at the seminar: "Teeth, Teeth, Teeth." That's what made him laugh, and I took the picture. As to relaxing him, he's a pretty relaxed guy already.

Thanks for the compliment, Condyk.

Great that you had the opportunity to use that lens. I'm also patiently awaiting it's arrival.

It's November - it should be out this month, darnit!

I eagerly await some thorough reviews of this lens... It's either this one or the 85mm f/1.2L making the next prime for me. I'd really rather it be this lens but time will tell.

For my money, it'd be the 85 all the way.

Thanks for sharing its a nice capture , as you say maybe a higher ISO would have given a better idea , but if you were fairly stable taking the pic i dont see anything in it that id pay 10 times the price of my 1.4 for..

No kidding. The XTi is out...the 70-200/4 IS is out. I wonder if they didn't have to work some unanticipated bugs out of this lens.

looks real nice mark. So you tried the 300 AGAIN and did not take one home? Wanna trade a 1dsmk2 for a 300 2.8?
