Just to let you know, you are asking that question of a feller who bought 1DsMkII (Digic I version) barely weeks after the cameras were introduced ? OOOOOhhhh $$$$$$$.

Are you referring to me, buying it weeks after it was introduced with the digic 1? That would be INCORRECTOMUNDO, oh Petiesan.

The camera was out almost 8 months by the time I got it, and by golly it's got the digic II.

now, is the 50 worth it?

Let me try to answer it this way.

At the show was a world famous wedding photographer. He showed a bit of his portfolio, pictures ranging from JFK Jr's wedding, Don Henley (of The Eagles), etc, etc. He said many of the photos he took with one of his favorite lenses.

Can you guess which one?

Oh, Hef, you know you're right. Obviously, Petey never watched The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where Buddy Hackett was a famous and incredibly funny guest over and over again.

Now, back to the guessing.

To take great pictures all you really need is a box and some film... Or perhaps in more modern terms, an SLR and a 50mm.

No, because it was often in conflict with the WWF time slot.

While there is a lot of truth to that statement, your own gear list belies it.

I'm actually quite enamored with the 5D, having seen results from it, fantastic skin tones, etc. I dare say a polaroid or box camera won't do quite as well, with the absence of noise, etc.

Now, as no one took a guess, the famous wedding photographer stated his most used lens is the 200 f1.8; yep, the holy grail costing and arm and then some.

Some of the shots he got would have been difficult if not impossible with a lesser piece of glass.

So, is the 50 f1.2 worth it? If it enables you to get THE shot, THE keeper, that you otherwise would not be able to get because of demanding conditions, then yes it is definitely worth it.

I just skimmed through that thread, sorry.
Does anyone know when is this lens supposed to be available in North America?
Cheers.

It's supposed to be available now. Everything I had heard said by November (as in, end of october). Before the end of the year, anyway.

Try refreshing the page. I use Pbase as a hosting site and before a week or so ago never had this problem. If I refresh, it comes right back.

Any ideas why that is happening?

mark,
pbase uses rotating image servers - any of which may be down or traffic diverted from due to load.. you can use the reference link to your photo, which is http://www.pbase.com/image/69621268.jpg (external link)

I thought the interesting information on the product description page for the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM on Amazon.com was this:

What do customers ultimately buy after viewing this item?

32% buy Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens $76.94
27% buy Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Medium Telephoto Lens $324.95
14% buy Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens $1,599.99

I'd love to answer you, but I can't pin down what you are referring to.

Anyway, I'm going back to the show today and will attempt to improve my testing technique. I'm going to lay down, or have the rep hold a dollar bill. I'm going to use between 400 and 800 iso, and shoot the lens between 1.2 and 5.6. Hopefully, that will resolve some sharpness and contrast questions.

I'll also try to take better note of its focusing ability, including with AIServo, though I don't really think that is its intended purpose. I'll stand corrected though on that point.

Petey, why are you still sleeping? It's 8:02 New Yawk time, that would be Eastern Standard Time, as in the only real time that counts, and I'm leaving in 28 minutes for the 50 mile drive to the show.

Yours in future testing: The Dolt.
